If you've been asked to be a Best Man, you'll be aware that it's a huge honour, a very proud moment... and also a terrifying one! Writing a Best Man speech is something that troubles most people - and everyone will tell you different ways to do it!
Well here's a little bit of help. Below is a guideline to how a Best Man speech should be structured. Use this as a guide, add your stories around the sections, and hey presto! A great Best Man speech!
The introduction
Begin your Best Man speech by introducing yourself to everyone. Tell them your name, tell them you're the Best Man, and make a small joke as an icebreaker (check out the link at the end of this article). Now start by telling your audience how you met the Groom. How long have you known him? Where did you meet? Talk about what sort of person the Groom was when you met him - I'd guess he wasn't the decent and respectable person he is now!
Who is the Groom?
Now we know how you met the Groom, move your Best Man speech on to what sort of person he is. Did you go to college with the Groom? What jobs has he done since college or university? Employment history always gives you lots of stories and situations that can be used in your speech. Ask the Groom's ex colleagues about his past work... he's bound to of made a clown of himself at some works party or other!
Who REALLY is the Groom?
So we know how you met the Groom, and we know what sort of person he is from his work. But what else does he do? Your Best Man speech should now talk about the Groom away from work. Talk about what he enjoys doing, his interests, how he spends his spare time etc. Everyone has a past time that can be talked about in a Best Man speech in an amusing way!
And now the Bride...
We've poked enough fun at the Groom for now - so let's now talk about the Bride and Groom as a couple. How did they meet? How long have they been together? Where did the romance begin? Ask the Groom - they'll be plenty of jokes based around him meeting his fiancee!
The Bride & Groom...
Your Best Man speech should now focus on the wedding couple. Tell your audience about what sort of couple they are. What do they do together, and how do they spend their spare time with each other? A memorable Best Man speech is full of this - it makes people laugh whilst poking gentle fun at the Groom, but always includes the Bride in the stories so she doesn't feel left out.
Wrapping it up...
You've spent around 5 minutes telling the audience about the Groom, and now it's time to wrap up your Best Man speech. Offer advice and help to the happy couple on their future marriage, and tell them how much it means for you to be their Best Man. It's an honour - tell them!
Raise a glass...
Finish the Best Man speech by telling everyone how wonderful it's been to be the Best Man, and raise a toast to the Bridesmaids. Then - raise your final toast to the Bride & Groom. Ask people to stand and raise glasses to the new "Mr & Mrs XXXX".
The end!
You did it! Sit down, relax, and have a celebratory drink! The night is yours to unwind!
